Argentina's first grower-designated wines that offer a true 'sense of place.'

Ed Lehrman and Nick Ramkowsky of Vine Connections have tasted over a thousand wines since they began importing from Argentina. In that time, they discovered a handful of grape growers whose results in the vineyards with specific varietals have been truly amazing--year in, year out. Ed and Nick's first encounter with many of these growers was at a posta del vinatero, or "tavern of the grape grower". Here they drank wine with the growers and spoke passionately for hours about their soils, their vines, and their quest for superior flavors in their grapes. Vine Connections salutes the hard work and skill of these growers by offering these vineyard-designated releases made solely with their special grapes.

La Posta 2010 Malbec, Fazzio Vineyard, Tupungato
Rating: 90

The 2010 Malbec Fazzio Vineyard is from Tupungato and sees 25% aging in French oak. It has more of a red fruit profile than the other single vineyard wines, with red currant, raspberry and cassis notes. The palate is well-defined with supple tannins, crisp acidity and a feminine, finely tuned finish that is punches above its weight in terms of complexity. This is an excellent wine for the price. Drink now-2018.

The 2010 Malbec Pizzella Family Vineyard also spent 14 months in 25% new French oak. Earthy minerals, spice box, tobacco, lavender, and black cherry compose the nose of this elegant, nicely proportioned, lengthy red that also offers outstanding value. It will provide considerable pleasure over the next 5-6 years.

Rating: 88

The current releases include one recommendable white wine, the 2011 Cocina Blanco, a blend of 70% Chardonnay, 15% Torrontes, and 15% Sauvignon Blanc fermented and aged in stainless steel. Aromas of white peach, floral notes, and a hint of tropical fruits (especially pineapple) inform the nose of a crisp, spicy, dry wine that is meant for drinking over the next 1-2 years. It is an excellent value.

There's a creamy edge to the dark cherry and concentrated blueberry flavors in this ripe red, which shows lingering nuances of tar, mineral, mocha and espresso.

La Posta 2011 'Cocina' Tinto, Mendoza
Rating: 91

A blend of 60 percent Malbec with equal parts of Syrah and Bonarda, this has notes of violets and ripe cherries over an earthy minerality. While it's a middleweight, the tension in the structure gives this the power of a heavyweight boxer.

Aromas of toasty blueberry muffin with a supple, fruity-yet-dry medium-to-full body and a long, creme brulee, toffee and berry compote finish with dusty tannins. Wonderfully balanced and juicy; will be a hit with Latin beef.

La Posta 2012 Malbec, Angel Paulucci Vineyard, Mendoza
Rating: 89(+?)

Bright, dark red. Raspberry, violet and pepper on the lively nose. A step up in density from the Cocina Tinto blend but still quite dry and savory, showing a fine-grained texture and good energy to its berry and spice flavors. Finishes with a firm dusting of tannins and very good limestone lift. There may be more to come here.
