Moris family (with just one R) came from Spain more than 250 years ago. The family owns a big estate in the pretty hill town of Massa Marittima in the heart of Maremma since generations. The owners of Moris Farms are 3 brothers and 3 sisters. One of the brothers chose the English name Moris Farms in 1971 when they bought a new estate located few miles South Grosseto, for this reason the name of the company has an S at the end.
The Moris family has dedicated itself for generations to agriculture and over the years have increased their interest and specialization in viticulture. With this investment of interest, attention and ambition, they have been rewarded with the utmost of satisfaction of sharing their quality product with wine enthusiast around the world.
The actual surface area of the Moris family's farm is 476 hectares and is divided as follows: - 420 Hectares: Located near to Massa Marittima (Fattoria Poggetti), of which 37 hectares of vineyards are contained within the DOC of "Monteregio di Massa Marittima".- 56 Hectares: Within the property of Poggio la Mozza, of which 33 hectares of vineyards are contained with the DOCG of "Morellino di Scansano."
Fattoria Poggetti, Massa Marittima – 37 hectares With early plantings in the 1970's and more recent plantings in the 1990 and 2003, the vineyards of Poggetti lie 80 - 100 meters above sea level. The soil is composed of clay, with a pH slightly alkaline (7,7); due to the presence of an elevated content of pure calcium. The exposition of the rows is facing south west, and the density of the foundation is abundant (35 %) which allows for an excellent drainage.
Poggio la Mozza, Scansano – 33 hectares Located 100 meters above sea level in the heart of Scansano, we began replanting our vineyards in 1995 and finished these changes in 2004. The soil in this hilly area contains a slight crumbling of rock and appears sandy, with traces of limestone. The foundation is notably dense and deep. The pH has a tendency toward acidity: 6, 3, with an exposition of the rows north to south.
From Gambero Rosso 2012 "The estate is named after the father-in-law of
the current owner, Adolfo Parentini. The surname Moris originates from Spain,
like Adolfo’s ancestors, who came to Tuscany two centuries ago. The addition of
“Farms” from the English is due to the fact that a range of agricultural
produce was once grown here. Today, Adolfo’s son Giulio works alongside him
managing the estate. Growing grapes and making wine are the main concerns of
both farms, Fattoria Poggetti at Massa Marittima and Poggio alla Mozza at
Scansano."
