Chateau Puits du Roy

Country of Origin: France
Location: Entre-Deux-Mer, Bordeaux
People: Damien Laurent, Owner & Winemaker

Chateau Puits du Roy is a second label of the impressive Chateau L’Escart, a small winery in Entre-Deux-Mer with deep roots. Its owner, Damien Laurent, is a seventh-generation winemaker. The chateau and the vineyards have been used for winemaking since 1752, and their vines are, on average, 43 years old. Their winemaking is focused on producing bottles that the reflect the agricultural heritage that they are so deeply ensconced in. Damien and his wife Lorena are involved in every stage of production, from riding the tractor to making sales calls. Though their motto is that fine wine depends mainly on the quality of the grapes, it clearly also depends in this case on the brow sweat of the Laurents.

Located in the town of Saint-Loubes, their vineyard is a 91.5 acre site composed of fine gravel and clay-limestone soil. The limestone in the soils gives wines their freshness, length, and distinction. The clay contributes to their strength and density. The Laurents consider the land on loan from their children, and, as such, they practice organic viticulture with many biodynamic practices.

Chateau L’Escart produces 18,330 cases annually of mostly red wines based on Merlot, Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Cabernet Franc (carrying the Bordeaux or Bordeaux Superieur appellations). Nearly 80 percent of that is exported.
