Valerie Godelu left behind a career in commercial banking in Paris to return to school and study winemaking, then set up shop in Bordeaux. She didn’t dream of owning a huge chateau, but wanted a few acres within walking distance that she could call her own. In 2008, she opened up her microwinery, Les Trois Petiotes, named for her three girls, her three hectares, and her three grapes--Merlot, Malbec, and Cabernet Franc. With her husband helping on the weekends, she made her first two vintages in Saint-Andre-de-Cubzac until her own cellar was finished in 2011. Her organically farmed (Ecocert-certified), 35-year-old vines are grown in clay and limestone soils. They harvest and sort by hand, then practice slow fermentation in large tank with wild yeast. The wine ages for 12 months in French oak. Nothing is fined or filtered, and the sulfur is kept to a minimum. And the wine that results is a true labor of love. They produce between 5000 and 10,000 bottles per year.
