All of its vintages are kept in wood and bottled only upon demand, ensuring the best aging of the wine possible.

Tasting Notes:
"*****... intensely perfumed... a full palate—concentrated vinosity, hints of fudge—opening out to a powerful, lingering aftertaste of black treacle ... Another winner." - Alex Liddell, Author of the book Madeira

Food Pairing: Try Dark Chocolate Cake with Orange Ganache and Orange Buttercream

About Madeira: The small, steep volcanic island of Madeira off the coast of Portugal was historically an important port of call for ships en route to Africa, Asia, and South America, and, in turn, became an important port of call for sailors to stock up on booze. By the end of the 16th century, the Madeiran wine industry had become an international phenomenon. The wines were originally fortified to help them last through their long sea journeys, but drinkers soon developed a taste for the maturation that the heat and the rolling of the ship provided. The wine became so popular in the North American colonies that it was used to toast the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

The major grapes in Madeira are Sercial, Verdelho, Bual, and Malvasia, each vinified to a unique style and level of sweetness. Long ship journeys are no longer used for aging, but rather, the estufa method is often employed, in which hot water circulates through a coil in the middle of a steel tank, heating the wine for 90 days, or the wine is stored in a room with steam pipes for 6 months to a year. The finest madeiras, though, are made without any heating besides the sun and time (20 years!). Madeira is decidedly unique, and quite probably the world’s longest living wine.

D'Oliveira 1912 Verdelho, Madeira DOC
Rating: 98

This vintage hails exclusively from the d’Oliveira family’s historic São Martinho vineyard high up in the hills overlooking Câmara de Lobos and it is clearly one of the most brilliant bottles of Madeira I have ever had the pleasure to taste (I cannot believe I have had the good fortune to drink this wine on three occasions in the last couple of years!), as it is majestic on both the nose and palate. The wine was bottled in 2008. The utterly brilliant nose soars from the glass in a very complex constellation of cherries, oranges, molasses, lavender, exotic spice tones, rancio, a touch of wild fennel, spiced meats, cigar smoke and a lovely and complex base of salty soil. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, pure and simply explosive, with flawless focus and balance, tangy acids, magical complexity and simply stunning length and grip on the very pure, very elegant and still powerfully vibrant finish. What a magical wine! 2014-2100+.

Aged for 95 years in the warehouse at Rua Visconde do Anadia, this bottle of 1912 Verdelho was better than the one encountered on the island in April 2010. It was the last family bottling from San Martinho, which was renowned for its Verdelho and is now urbanized. Here, it has a complex bouquet of mandarin, toffee apple, wood resin and a touch of marmalade. The palate is medium-bodied with an elegant entry, very good acidity and a long, bitter orange finish. This is drinking perfectly now and should continue to age over the next 30 to 40-years.

Aged for 95 years in the warehouse at Rua Visconde do Anadia, this has a lifted bouquet of dried mango, apricot, sea salt, toffee apple and quince _ still fresh and vibrant. The palate is quite feminine and understated with notes of caramel, smoke, walnut and a torrefactory finish, which seems to be drying out a little, fraying at the seams. - Neal Martin, Wine Journal
