Tasting Notes: The aromas practically jump out of the glass: freshly cut flowers, anise, pear, and a touch of pleasant earthiness. On the palate, it has solid weight and flavors of pear, fresh white rice, a pastis-like licorice flavor, and a clean finish not often found in nigori sake. Makes you want to come back for another sip. Tozai represents a unique collaboration between the sixth-generation Japanese sake brewery Daimon Shuzo, the British-born Master Sake Brewer Philip Harper, the prominent Kyoto-based American artist Daniel Kelly (who designed the front label), and America's leading importer of chilled, premium, artisanal Japanese sake, Vine Connections. Tozai means "East-West" in Japanese and evokes the spirit of the alliance that created this special sake.

Tozai (720 ml) 'Voices in the Mist' Ginjo Nigori
Rating: 89
Opaque pearl white color with fine sediment. Mild aromas of tapioca and whipped cream follow through on a silky entry to a dryish medium body with notes of jicama, banana, and melon rind. Finishes with a drying, smooth gravel and pepper kissed fade. A nice, cleanly made, lighter example of the style

Silver Medal "Highly Recommended" Milky white gray color. Banana cream pie and honeyed cashew aromas follow through on a soft, brisk entry to a dry-yet-fruity medium body with overripe apple, bamboo shoot, and dusty turnip notes. Finishes with a peppery spice, apple yogurt, powdered milk, and mineral fade
