Vintage Notes: 2010 created denser, more structured wines than 2009, but at a similar level. Winemaking Notes: No filtration and fining with egg whites. L'Ermita is destemmed by hand. Maceration is for 25 days. Fermentation is in oak vats with punching down. Malolactic occurs in barrel. Wine is aged in 100% new French barrique.
Vineyard Notes: A dramatically steep 2-hectare north-facing vineyard of 70-year-old, head-pruned vines. About Alvaro Palacios: One of nine children born to the owners of Rioja's respected Palacios Remondo, Alvaro studied enology in Bordeaux, while working under Jean-Pierre Moueix at Ch. Pétrus. He credits his tenure at Pétrus for much of his winemaking philosophy and for showing him "the importance of great wines."
Alvaro could have returned to the security of his family's domaine. But instead, he was drawn to the remote and seductive Priorat, 60 miles from Barcelona, which had been one of Spain's important pre-Phylloxera wine regions. With its unique terroir of steep hills and terraces Alvaro believed that here he could make a wine that evoked both Pétrus and Grange. 95pts (2011 vintage) International Wine Cellar 10/2013 "Glass-staining ruby. Heady, complex scents of candied dark berries, incense, potpourri and smoky minerals, with a sexy vanilla nuance in the background. Juicy, penetrating and pure, with superb clarity and power to the black raspberry and boysenberry flavors. The floral element comes back strong on the mineral-driven finish, which lingers with outstanding tenacity, velvety tannins and echoing sweet blue fruit."
