Winemaking Notes: Pian dell'Orino Brunello di Montalcino is also made from 100% Sangiovese Grosso. Before harvest, the grapes are individually checked on the vines and cluster thinning is done. During harvest, the grapes are checked once more on a large table before being destemmed and placed in the fermentation bins. Then the grapes are left to macerate for a certain period, according to the vintage. Spontaneous fermentation starts and the temperature is automatically controlled so that it does not exceed 34°C. The must macerates for three to five weeks, depending on the vintage, in order to obtain greater concentration and structure in the young wine. The wine is then transferred to wooden oak barrels of 25 hectoliters (6,600 US gallons), where the malolactic fermentation takes effect. After 2 - 3 years of maturing in the barrels, when the wine becomes stabilized and appears brilliant, it is bottled without using a filter. The wine is left to mature in the bottle for at least one year before labeling and release.

93pts (2009 vintage) Wine Advocate 2/2014
"The 2009 Brunello di Montalcino opens to gorgeous floral tones that frame a darker core of dark fruit. The wine is extremely elegant, especially in the delicate way it puts forth its ethereal aromas of cola, licorice and grilled herb layer after layer. The palate delivers structure and good freshness. Drink: 2018-2028."

Pian dell'Orino 2008 Brunello di Montalcino DOCG
Rating: 94 (+?)

(14.5% alcohol): Bright red-ruby. Knockout nose combines red berries, vanilla, red licorice and sandalwood. Bright and fresh in the mouth, with penetrating flavors of sweet red cherry, strawberry, marzipan and candied violet. A laser beam of acidity keeps the extremely pure floral red berry flavors light and lively. This really resonates on the perfumed, sweet aftertaste. To take a page out of the French wine playbook, this marvelous Brunello magically combines Burgundian perfume with Bordeaux tannins and structure.

Pian dell'Orino 2008 Brunello di Montalcino DOCG
Rating: 94

One of the very best wines of the year, Pian dell’Orino’s 2008 Brunello di Montalcino is drop-dead gorgeous. Sweet dark cherries, cloves, menthol, tar and licorice are some of the many notes that are woven into fabric of superb elegance and finesse. All the elements are in perfect balance in this utterly harmonious Brunello. Deeply layered and spiced throughout, the 2008 is simply stunning. The 2008 isn’t as explosive as the very best vintages, but it is still a remarkable achievement for the year. Hints of orange peel and cloves add an exotic flair on the finish. This is a dazzling effort. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2028.
