Winemaking Notes: The Bolzano 'Huck am Bach' grapes Schiava and Lagrein grapes, which are native to the Alto Adige area, are sourced from the Huck am Bach vineyard. The vineyard enjoys a sub-Mediterranean climate (hot and dry). Juice is aged in large oak barrels after fermentation.

Tasting Notes: Ruby red, intensive aromas of ripe cherries, violets and almonds. Medium body, fruity taste, excellent precision. A bright and fruity number that is wonderful with food.

About the Alto Adige: An Italian wine zone framed by the Tyrol mountains, Alto Adige is bordered by Austria, and shares much of its cultural and winemaking traditions with its neighbor. Despite its northerly position, the region has a warm summer climate in the valleys and the hills, making vine growing possible. Schiava (Vernatsch) has typically been the dominant grape, but internationally styled wines made with Pinot Grigio and Chardonnay are currently overtaking more traditional styles. Santa Maddalena still is made from Schiava, and is the most important varietal DOC within the Alto Adige appellation. The second most important DOC is Lagrein, another native red grape. Other varietals include Pinot Nero, Silvaner, Muller-Thurgau, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Bianco, and Sauvignon Blanc. Blending and use of barriques are two newer developments in the region.
