Vinification:
The fruit is 100% destemmed with a high percentage of whole berries to mainly 1.5 ton fermenters. Cold soak lengths of an average of six days ensure gentle yet thorough extraction of color and flavor. The small lots are fermented with BRG, RC212, BGY, and wild yeasts for an average of seven days, and hand punched two to three times daily. The wine is aged eight months before being blended, filtered, and bottled.
Vintage Notes:
2012 was an outstanding vintage, marked by a long and mild growing season. A warm spring allowed bud break to happen on time, and the few rain showers during bloom served to reduce yields. The summer was beautiful with warm weather and very little rain, conditions which continued into the early fall. A period of cool, dry weather in early October allowed the grapes additional hang time, and harvest began in earnest in mid-October. 2012 will be remembered as a classic Oregon vintage with great weather and low yields. The wines show excellent concentration and intense flavors.
Tasting Notes:
All of the pieces of the Willamette Valley puzzle fit seamlessly together in the 2012 Jigsaw. An opulent garnet color in the glass, the wine opens with rich aromatics of black plum and violets. The palate is warm and expansive, with flavors of sarsaparilla and sweet earth punctuating plush, velveteen tannins. The wine finishes lavish and supple with lingering hints of muscovado sugar and blackberry conserve. Ready to drink now, with elegance and restraint enough to cellar.
