Vineyard Notes: The Mount Carmel vineyard is a steep, south-facing and celestial vineyard that was planted by Ron Piazza and Paul Albrecht in 1991 in accordance with a cloistered order of Carmelite nuns. There are currently 15 acres of Pinot Noir (clones 667, 2A, 5, 115, 777 and Mount Eden) and 7 acres of Chardonnay (Wente clone). Most of the vines are self-rooted and have been dry-farmed for years. The vineyard overlooks the Sanford & Benedict property and is just west of Sea Smoke. The vineyard is brutally influenced by the marine winds due to its severe elevation and aspect. Soils are a diverse combination of botella clay, limestone, diatomaceous earth, calcareous deposits and sandy loam. With the 2005 vintage, this special site became Brewer-Clifton's monopole and they could not be more excited to have complete access to this most revered and auspicious site.

Brewer-Clifton 2011 Pinot Noir, Mount Carmel, Sta. Rita Hills
Rating: 94

Vivid ruby-red. A heady, exotically perfumed bouquet displays vibrant red berry, blood orange and floral scents, along with wild notes of passion fruit and Asian spices. Smooth, palate-staining raspberry and cherry-cola flavors show superb clarity and power, picking up rose pastille and spicecake flavors with aeration. Closes with outstanding clarity and length, with silky tannins building and adding grip.

Brewer-Clifton 2011 Pinot Noir, Mount Carmel, Sta. Rita Hills
Rating: 95

The 2011 Pinot Noir Mount Carmel is a spectacular effort that delivers beautiful raspberry, strawberry, sappy underbrush, sea breeze and spice to go with a medium-bodied, rich and elegant palate. Knockout stuff that’s perfectly balanced and rich, without ever losing any focus or precision, it will evolve for 4-5 years and drink nicely through 2026. Drink now-2026.
