Grapes are from older vines on the estate vineyard Pago Balbaino. The 'Antique' Palo Cortado averages over thirty years in age, which qualifies it as a VORS (Vinum Optimum Rare Signatum or Very Old Rare Sherry).

The only simple definition of Palo Cortado is the name itself - 'cut stick' – referring to to the mark made on the cask when this style of wine is recognized. These are rare wines that are initially aged under flor to become a Fino or Amontillado, but (sometimes inexplicably) loses the flor and begins aging oxidatively like an Oloroso. Since the wine was originally destined to be a Fino or Amontillado, it will initially have had a single stroke marked on the cask. When the overseer realizes that the wine is becoming a Palo Cortado, he draws a cross (or cut) through the initial stroke (or stick), resulting in a crossed stroke or 'cut stick'

Fernando de Castilla 'Antique' Palo Cortado has very elegant aromas reminiscent of an old Amontillado with the full flavor of an Oloroso.

Fernando de Castilla (500 ml) 'Antique' Palo Cortado, Jerez DO
Rating: 93

The amber-colored NV Antique Palo Cortado has a clean, changing, lifted nose of white chocolate, orange marmalade, almonds and incense, while the balanced palate comes through quite intense, sharp, with good acidity and length. 3,000 bottles were filled. Drink 2013-2019.
