About the Alto Adige: An Italian wine zone framed by the Tyrol mountains, Alto Adige is bordered by Austria, and shares much of its cultural and winemaking traditions with its neighbor. Despite its northerly position, the region has a warm summer climate in the valleys and the hills, making vine growing possible. Schiava (Vernatsch) has typically been the dominant grape, but internationally styled wines made with Pinot Grigio and Chardonnay are currently overtaking more traditional styles. Santa Maddalena still is made from Schiava, and is the most important varietal DOC within the Alto Adige appellation. The second most important DOC is Lagrein, another native red grape. Other varietals include Pinot Nero, Silvaner, Muller-Thurgau, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Bianco, and Sauvignon Blanc. Blending and use of barriques are two newer developments in the region.
