Founded in 1998 by Ron and Jamie Coleman, Tamarack Cellars is dedicated to the production of small lot, hand-crafted wines from select vineyards in the Walla Walla Valley, Yakima Valley, Red Mountain and Columbia Valley appellations. The winery is located in a restored WW II fire station and barracks at the Walla Walla Airport Complex. Production began in 1998 and is currently up to 5800 cases of the 2001 vintage.

Wines made are Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, DuBrul Vineyard Reserve, Syrah, Chardonnay, and Firehouse Red. Ron Coleman serves as winemaker and general manager. He comes to the job after a long career in the wine industry with experience in wholesale and retail sales, as a sommelier, and through cellar work for Waterbrook and Canoe Ridge wineries. Dan Gordon is the Assistant Winemaker at Tamarack Cellars. His duties include the hands-on daily winemaking decisions, overseeing and occasionally working in the tasting room, some special events participation and outside sales to certain markets. Martin Ibarra is the Cellar Manager of Tamarack Cellars. Martin Ibarra helps Dan Gordon with the daily hands-on wine work and maintaining the winery grounds.

Bright red-ruby. Musky aromas of dark berries and chocolate mint. Sweet but a bit edgy and high-toned, with modest depth and nuance to the plum, chocolate and espresso flavors. Finishes with supple tannins and good length.

Rating: 87

Similarly styled, with a delicious, medium-bodied, easy drinking profile, the 2011 Firehouse Red is a kitchen sink blend of 26% Merlot, 24% Syrah, 22% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Cabernet Franc and smaller parts of Sangiovese, Malbec, Zinfandel and Grenache. Big, fleshy and well textured, with plenty of red and black fruit, pepper, underbrush and spice box qualities, it should be consumed over the coming handful of years. Drink now-2016.

Rating: 88

Good bright red. Aromas of redcurrant and dried flowers are a bit weighed down by smoky oak. Fresh and fruit-forward, with floral and saline nuances to the red berry flavors. Essentially supple and juicy in the middle, finishing with a note of nutty oak. Still young.

Tamarack Cellars 2011 Cabernet Franc, Wahluke Slope
Rating: 89

While not up to the 2010, the 2011 Cabernet Franc is nevertheless rock solid and a good value. Made from 100% Cabernet Franc and aged in 20% new oak, with the balance mostly 2-3 years old barrels, it is a big, voluptuous and softly textured effort that has beautiful fruit, excellent complexity and a medium to full-bodied, mouth-filling texture. Hard to resist, it should have 4-5 years of evolution. Drink now-2018.

This red is open-textured and inviting, with fine tannins blanketing the expressive currant, pomegranate and rose petal flavors, lingering easily on the finish. Best from 2016 thought 2020.

A well-integrated mix of grapes from a broad range of vineyards across the entire Columbia Valley, this outstanding value proves that good Chardonnay does not have to be strengthened by age in new oak barrels. Stone fruits, hints of tropical papaya, and banana, contribute to a complex, fruit-driven, well-balanced wine with medium-term aging potential. Best Buy.
