Vintage Notes: A cold spring put the grapes way behind at bloom, continuing through set and veraison. A mild summer with weeks of ideals grape ripening conditions began to catch up but not enough to make a normal start to harvest. Harvest began about 4 weeks later than normal, but the weather was quite nice. The freeze to end harvest did not come until Thanksgiving, which allowed for extra hang time and better ripeness.

Winemaking Notes: Dropped by gravity straight to the press, squeezed directly to barrel and chilled, inoculated with Chardonnay 3079 yeast, primary fermentation started and completed in barrel with secondary fermentation started but not completed, about 35% malic acid is left in the Chardonnay.

Tasting Notes: Rich pear, tropical pineapple and honeysuckle on the nose lead to tart red apple and pear with exceptional acidity and a luscious butterscotch finish. The best of both worlds, this wine is barrel-fermented and aged in neutral French oak, to highlight the fruit and add complexity.

Reviews
Tamarack Cellars 2012 Chardonnay, Columbia Valley
Rating: 90

A well-integrated mix of grapes from a broad range of vineyards across the entire Columbia Valley, this outstanding value proves that good Chardonnay does not have to be strengthened by age in new oak barrels. Stone fruits, hints of tropical papaya, and banana, contribute to a complex, fruit-driven, well-balanced wine with medium-term aging potential. Best Buy.
