J. Bouchon, in its current state, brings together youth and tradition. Their history goes back to 1892 when Emile Bouchon left Bordeaux to come to Chile. The family's vision is to take the great terroir and to re-focus on great boutique wines made with the Bordeaux grape varieties with which they work. Today, with Patrick Vallette's assistance in the cellar, Julio Bouchon and his children produce wines bound to the terroir from where they come. Julio Bouchon is an Agronomist that graduated at the University of Chile and holds an Enologist degree from the University of Bordeaux.

With the acquisition in 1977 of the Santa MarĂa de Mingre estate in the Maule Valley, began an ambitious process of modernization that would include the construction of new facilities and the planting of traditional varieties. Thanks to this visionary effort, in the decade of the nineties their wines started being exported from Chile to the world, propelling their winery to international recognition. Today, with more than a century of wine growing tradition, Julio Bouchon and his children perpetuate this deeply rooted family inheritance, producing wines of character.

Location: There are two faces to the Maule Valley - northern Maule and southern Maule (around Cauquenes). To the north, its beautiful rolling hills with granitic soils on top and clay structure below allow for deep root development and are perfect for growing Bordeaux varieties. The southern part is filled with small family old-vine vineyards - dry-farmed Carignane, Malbec, and Pais are found. Generally, in Maule, the region receives sufficient rain so that irrigation is not necessary. The wines are characterized by bright acidity and juicy fruit.

J. Bouchon 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon, Maule Valley
Rating: 90

Saturated ruby. Fresh plum, cherry, pipe tobacco and mint on the nose, with a subtle undertone of sweet oak. Then juicy and smooth in the mouth, with good lift and cut to the flavors of black raspberry and cherry-cola. A jolt of rhubarb adds refreshing bitterness to the finish, which is framed by supple, slow-building tannins.

Vivid ruby-red. Spicy cherry and red berry aromas are complicated by pungent herbs and floral oils. Taut and focused on the palate, offering vibrant redcurrant and bitter cherry flavors that turn spicier with air. Finishes with refreshing bite, supple tannins and strong fruit-driven persistence. Outstanding value here.

Dark ruby. Fresh dark berry and cherry aromas are complicated by spicecake and floral nuances. The palate offers spicy blackberry and bitter cherry flavors enlivened by suggestions of cracked pepper and violet. The bright, spice-accented finish features fine-grained tannins and a late floral kick.
