Cerbaiona Brunello Winemaking Notes: The 2008 Brunello here is cut from the same cloth as the 2008s from Piemonte’s top traditional estates. It’s a beautiful, seamless wine that may not be as packed as the 2006, but that will provide a complete drinking experience over its long life. A maximum of 650 cases are produced of the estate’s flagship wine. Since 1982, this has consistently ranked among Montalcino’s most distinctive and revered wines, with an exotic spirit unlike any of its peers. Fruit is picked by hand and 100% destemmed. Aged 3+ years in 2,000L neutral Slavonian cask plus 8+ months in bottle. No fining or filtration. Aging occurs solely in large, neutral botti.

Vintage Notes: A relatively "normal" vintage - similar to 2005.

About: Diego Molinari retired in 1979 after 25 years at Alitalia, and planted the beautiful Cerbaiona estate. Blessed with a great site, they have turned out tiny quantities of one of Montalcino's great wines ever since.

93pts (2009 vintage) Wine Advocate (2/2014)
"The 2009 Brunello di Montalcino shows the signature sophistication this iconic estate is celebrated for. Sadly, Diego and Nora Molinari have announced their intention to sell Cerbaiona and we may soon be looking at new ownership. A dark appearance segues to brooding aromas of licorice, tar, cherry and spice that wrap around the long, polished finish. Drink: 2016-2024."

Cerbaiona 2008 Brunello di Montalcino DOCG
Rating: 92

Fully saturated red-ruby. Dark cherry and plum aromas with warmer notes of tobacco and coffee; fresher red cherry and berry nuances emerge with aeration. Enters the mouth with supple, sweet flavors of dark cherry, coffee and underbrush, then turns tighter but polished and suave on the back, with harmonious acidity lifting the ripe dark fruit flavors. There's something vaguely exotic about this wine. I'd decant it at least a couple of hours ahead to allow it fully to deploy its complex aromas and flavors.

Cerbaiona 2008 Brunello di Montalcino DOCG
Rating: 93+

Succulent red cherries, dried roses, violets, tar and spices are some of the many notes that are woven together in the 2008 Brunello di Montalcino. Intensely perfumed, the 2008 shows many of the classic Cerbaiona signatures, even if it is a touch less polished than some of the recent vintages. At the same time, the 2008 has come together nicely over the last few years, so it will be interesting to watch what happens with further time in bottle. Dried rose petals and spices add complexity to the subtle, layered flavors. This is one of the stronger wines of the year. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2026.
