Winemaking Notes: The Rosso comes from a parcel that directly abuts the original Brunello site but, for political reasons, was denied Brunello status when it was planted in the 1980s. As the vines have matured, its wine is coming to resemble the house Brunello. As noted last year, the 2007 Rosso was awarded Tre Bicchieri, and the 2010 surpasses it by a wide margin - in fact, it surpasses all but a handful of Brunello! Fruit is picked by hand and 100% destemmed. Wine is aged for 18 months in 750L neutral Slavonian cask. No fining or filtration.
Fruit Source: 13-ha vineyard on a steep, south-facing slope near the town Montalcino (1/2 entitled to Brunello, 1/2 entitled to Rosso or Sant'Antimo).
About: Diego Molinari retired in 1979 after 25 years at Alitalia, and planted the beautiful Cerbaiona estate. Blessed with a great site, they have turned out tiny quantities of one of Montalcino's great wines ever since.

Cerbaiona 2010 Rosso di Montalcino DOC
Rating: 92
The 2010 Rosso di Montalcino is drop-dead gorgeous. Sweet dark cherries, spices, menthol and new leather are woven together beautifully in the glass. Savory herbs and licorice notes appear later as the wine opens up in the glass. There is a beautiful weight to the 2010, but no sense of heaviness whatsoever. The firm 2010 tannins are present yet unobtrusive. With time in the glass, the aromas and flavors brighten up in a wine that is pure class. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2018.
