Terroir: The jagged Sonoma Coast was formed millions of years ago when the Pacific Plate and the North American Plates collided, forming the dramatic mountainous coastline we marvel at today. Since the continent slid under, we now find ancient marine sediment pushed up on hill tops of the Sonoma Coast where our grapes grow.
The fog and cool air from the chilly Pacific Ocean pushes its way into Western Sonoma County by any path it finds. Sometimes slithering over the mountains and hills, often running through river valleys and natural gaps in the terrain, always providing a cool blanket to our Pinot Noir. This essential element, in the right vineyard site, is essential for a long slow growing season.
It is this double meaning of "marine layer"- earth and air - that inspires this wine.
The Banshee Marine Layer was aged for 15 months in 20% new French oak barrels and blended from four different vineyard sources. 4 barrels made.
Tasting Notes: Created from a careful selection of their best true Sonoma Coast vineyards, this special blend epitomizes the characteristics that have led them to make wine here: forest floor, tea, bright fruit flavors, pine, and enchanting aromatics.

Banshee 2011 'Marine Layer' Pinot Noir, Sonoma Coast
Rating: 90
Beautifully resonant on the glass, the 2012 Pinot Noir Bohemian flows with the essence of dark red cherries, plums, smoke, licorice and tobacco. There is gorgeous depth and persistence in the glass, along with an element of mystery that is hugely appealing. This is a terrific showing.

Ruby-red. Heady aromas of red berry preserves, cherry skin, potpourri and cola, with a subtle vanilla note emerging with air. Silky and sweet on the palate, offering energetic raspberry and bitter cherry flavors that pick up weight and a smoky quality in the glass. Shows impressive energy on the finish, which leaves rose and raspberry notes behind.
